Nothing new, everything changed: introducing re:defined
Switzerland – re:defined is a new upcycled clothing line from presenter and motorsport creator Carla Welti (alias CARLABELLE) in collaboration with Italian fashion designer Camilla Buonaccorsi (Inner Studios). Built from hand‑picked vintage and secondhand garments, each piece is a one‑of‑one – reworked with prints and stitching drawn from CARLABELLE’s 2023 motorsport season imagery. What started in 2021 with a search for a better way to make merchandise became a slow‑fashion project that is now ready to release after four years in the making.
“We didn’t want more of the same. We wanted to re:use what already exists and give it a second life – pieces with character, small imperfections and real stories,” says Carla Welti (CARLABELLE), founder of ArteFact GmbH.
“Every garment is treated like a canvas. The ‘re:’ isn’t a gimmick – it’s the process: re:claim, re:design, re:build,” adds Camilla Buonaccorsi (Inner Studios).
A capsule made by hand
The initial idea for what is now re:defined came up in 2021: To find a way to create merchandise products for CARLABELLE without dipping into fast fashion. With very minimal resources, a small capsule collection was hand-created and photographed within 3 days. All with hand picked second-hand clothing pieces.
The idea was bigger than this though, so the search for more continued. The development and prototyping phase took a full year, intentionally embracing the beauty of “flaws” that come with re‑working real garments.
Thrift, rework, and craft – without the shortcuts of fast fashion.
After a total of 4 years in the making, the debut collection featuring 32 unique pieces is now ready to launch. Spanning hoodies, tees, pullovers, beanies and denim jackets, produced by hand and shot across studio and outdoor locations – re:defined hopes to reshape the way modern merchandise is being produced.
Why it matters
re:defined rejects disposable merch and reframes clothing as archive, memory and performance. By starting with existing garments, the line reduces new material use and celebrates the patina of wear – nothing new, everything changed.
